Choosing a Prenatal Care Provider

Choosing a Prenatal Care Provider

The majority of women in Croatia receive their prenatal care from a gynecologist. You may choose to see a doctor covered under the public insurance system, or you may choose to pay out-of-pocket for a private doctor.  The obvious advantage of going with the public insurance doctor is the low-to-no cost associated with each visit. Advantages of going to a private doctor may include quicker access to care and better facilities and equipment.

Another consideration is language. Many doctors speak at least some English and some speak other languages with German and Italian being among the more common. Decide the level of language support you need and find a doctor that can match your needs. Alternatively, bring an interpreter to every appointment.

Prenatal care from a midwife is still impossible in Croatia.

Keep in mind that the bedside manner you might be accustomed to in your home country might be difficult to find in the typical Croatian doctor. Many might be unwilling to consider you an equal partner in your care. Rather, they might take the approach of telling you what to do and expecting you to be quiet and listen.  Be prepared for that. But also be aware that there are many caring doctors who are willing to go the extra mile.  In any case make sure that all your questions and concerns are addressed at each appointment.
